Back before smartphones in the days of “Speeds and Feeds” when Hardware was king, Dell Computers ruled the roost. They had an unbeatable selection of technology options at prices that traditional retailers couldn’t beat. Working with them on their Direct to Consumer business was an amazing experience in learning retail best practices and doing complex creative and multi-matrixed print production.
We did it all for Dell. We worked on a rolling calendar of creative concepting for monthly campaigns and seasonal promotions (holiday, moms/ dads/ grads, back to school, Days of Deals, etc). Once concepts were selected we went into full on production mode with matrixed versions and lots of tests. And unlike digital where you can make updates fairly quickly, the robustness of the QA process was unprecedented. If you made a mistake it was in print forever!
I worked on a very large team leading up the biggest component part of the engagement with about 25 dedicated resources. As AOR, we were constantly pushing strategic initiatives and being proactive with new ideas to ensure our clients were impressed with our thinking. We did our own photoshoots and helped conduct focus groups as well as provided campaign analytics. It was truly an end-to-end marketing learning experience with a great group of talented clients and peers.
